Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos look compact on a map and are anything but. The single biggest mistake in multi-country planning is underestimating internal transit: a badly-built three-country trip can burn five of fourteen days in airports and border posts. These are three routings we run repeatedly because they work.
Hanoi (3) → Ha Long or Bai Tu Long Bay (1 night on board) → Hoi An via Da Nang (3) → Ho Chi Minh City (2) → Siem Reap (3) → home.
Two domestic Vietnamese flights and one short international hop into Siem Reap. It gives you the country’s three anchors plus Angkor without any long overland day, and it is the routing we recommend for a first Indochina trip.
Luang Prabang (3) → Vientiane (1) → flight to Hanoi (3) → Ha Long (1 night) → flight to Ho Chi Minh City (2) → Mekong Delta and overland border into Cambodia → Phnom Penh (2) → Siem Reap (3).
This is the version for travellers who want the river and the border crossings to be part of the trip rather than an obstacle. The Delta-to-Cambodia leg is handled by our own vehicles on both sides — the same crew hands you over, which is where most agency trips wobble.
Siem Reap (3) → flight to Da Nang for Hoi An (3) → Hanoi (2) → Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay (1 night) → home.
If you have ten days, three countries is too many. Dropping Laos buys you slower mornings, and Laos genuinely deserves its own trip — it is the country clients most often say they wished they had given more time.
